In 1910, the Lara Post Office had it?s first telephone. Electricity was connected to Lara in 1926 and in 1947 the Lara community was connected to the Geelong water system. The first European name applied to the Lara area was Kennedy?s Creek, a name bestowed by the explorers, Hovell and Hume, honoring one of their party which camped there in 1824. Darke?s map of 1841 uses the native name Woorn Yaloak. Limeburners Creek was also used reflecting the industry which continues today. But the most used name was Duck Ponds. Another name, Hovell?s Creek, caused much local protest and resulted in the current name of Lara being proclaimed in Aug. 1874. Avalon Airfield was established in 1953 in the face of a lot of local protest. We want the 2008 Lara Heritage Festival to be the best ever and to achieve that we need your participation. There are many opportunities for you, or your group, to be involved and showcase your community. Do you want to take part in the Grand Parade or run a stall? If so, now is the time to commit. Phone Jackie on 5282 4680 Matthew Flinders was one of the first Europeans to visit the locality when he climbed the You Yangs for a better view of the area. A French exploration ship was in the Bay around the same time but there are no records of their activities. They were followed by an expedition from the Sorrento settlement led by Lieutenant Tuckey. He and his group were the first recorded Europeans to have non friendly contact with the local inhabitants. In 1803, following the abandonment of the European settlement at Sorrento, some of the convicts escaped and one of them, William Buckley, met the local Aboriginal people at a place the natives called Kooraioo. He lived with them for 32 years before he showed himself to John Batman?s party at Indented Head. After some lobbying by senior citizens, it has been decided to include a Scooter section in the Grand Parade. So if you are a proud scooter rider and would like to be part of the Parade, please contact Tom on 0411 333 196. We are also holding a Duck Ponds Poet?s Competition during the festival. So if you fancy yourself as a poet, call Tom on above number. It is now 25 years since the establishment of the Lara Heritage Festival. The 2008 festival will be the tenth anniversary of this unique event. This Lara festival was the brainchild of the Lara Progress Association, the Lara Lions Club and the then Corio Shire with lots of input from the community and backing from local businesses. The Lara Heritage Festival is a celebration of what Lara is about, where we have come from and a strong belief in the future of our unique community. It will be entertaining and allow residents to join together and have fun. Our children and new residents will learn about what Lara was like in earlier days. Visitors will have the opportunity to engage in and join the fun. The 2008 Festival will feature a whole range of activities including heritage displays, an old time dance, youth disco, a talent showcase and many bands playing a range of music styles. There will be approximately 60 stalls featuring arts, crafts, food and wine plus much more. The colourful Grand and Torchlight Parades will be highlights of the Festival. Some other major events will be confirmed as we get closer to the date.
2008 Festival Patron The Lara Heritage Festival committee is delighted to announce that Mr. Don Robinson has agreed to be Patron for the 2008 Festival. Don was born in Colac and began a long and successful career in retailing in Geelong which took him to roles managing stores across Victoria and South Australia. In 1974, Don, and his wife Jeanette, purchased the Lara Supermarket and continued to meet Lara’s needs under the Tuckerbag banner. Over the years, Don and Jeanette won many awards including Australian Supermarket of the Year. In the early years, Don launched ‘Lara Happenings’ on the back of his ‘specials’ flyer. At Tuckerbag, Don was always generous to local causes. The business was sold to Safeway in 1998. Don has been involved in many Lara community groups over the years including the Fire Brigade, the Heritage Festival, Uniting Church, Masonic Lodge, Flinders Peak School Council and the Lions Club where he was President in 2004-5. Don has been married to Jeanette for 44 years and has 2 married daughters and 5 grand children. His hobbies include cycling, athletics, fishing and golf. Don and Jeanette are regulars at Kardinia Park to watch the Cats. Many will recall Don riding his Penny Farthing bicycle at previous festivals.
